The Art of an Aussie Breakfast: Is your brunch export ready?

Australians are so good at brunch it is being exported and catching on all over the world. That’s right, more and more young Aussies are popping up in America, Asia and Europe to serve laid back, delicious and, most importantly, Instagrammable breakfast food.

The hearty, and often nutritious, meals that come part and parcel with the Australian brunch trend are perfect for Americans especially; they’re quite a contrast to special occasion American breakfasts that are usually pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, or something very starchy, oily and sugary.

Australian brunches are creative, colourful and often decadent (without resorting to American style grease and sugar overloads). With staples like smashed avo, poached eggs and smoked salmon, Aussies are spoilt for choice no matter where they go. And breakfast isn’t just for the early hours any more, with all-day breakfast menus the norm in inner-city cafes across the country.

So how does your menu stack up? Does it meet export standard? Here are our top tips to nail the art of an Aussie breakfast…

International influences allow for a host of unique combinations and flavours. Middle Eastern and Asian flavours are particularly popular with falafels and dips or breakfast burgers with Japanese inspired milk buns.

A good base makes a world of difference to eggs and their typical counterparts. Experiment with thick cuts (like Tip Top Super Thick) or even pancakes.

New flavours are important. Make sure you keep your staples steady and play around with your specials to maintain a loyal customer base.

Colour & texture are key. This is where America gets it wrong. Balance out something heavy with something light, something oily with something fresh and be sure the whole plate isn’t brown.

Fresh flavours are a great way of ensuring your menu is full of colourful and tasty seasonal produce, rather than relying on flavours stored in a bottle or jar. This is also a good way of mixing your breakfast toppings up, while maintaining your customers’ favourite bases.
